We are excited to host the first Juneteenth Celebration in Demopolis! This event is to commemorate the End of Slavery in the United States and to celebrate the great accomplishments African Americans have contributed to this city, county, surrounding counties, state, and nation!

About Essex House South
Our History
John Essex, a Black farmer from Marengo County, sold land to the Marengo County School Board for $1, essentially donating 20+ acres and money to build a school to educate children in the Salt Well and Marengo County community. The original school was built in 1930 but a mysterious fire destroyed the 4 room wooden school building. The current building was erected in 1966.
In 2022, John Essex High was purchased and renamed The Essex House South. The space is designed to be a multi-use space for small business owners and diverse clients for special events.
